This is part of a series of 'Oriental rugs' I've made out of scrap wood. I got bored with the anal-retentive exactitude of framing every wooden wall composition, so I began to make 'fringes' on a couple of sides, and instead of going for a purely original design, I've been basing my concept upon rugs from the multitude of countries who've been making them for millennia. This rug was inspired by a piece of scrap that shall be used elsewhere; indeed, this is the first time I've employed 'ghost scrap.' I'm not sure about that term, but who knows? I decided to build a little excitement by use of freshly-cut padauk (the red wood), which starts out bright and darkens over time. I see this piece becoming much better-looking (and expensive) over time. I added even more excitement by aligning what could be called squares (squarelike rectangles, really) at 45 degree angles, and filling in the gaps. This is fairly complicated for a one-layer scrap composition, and I don't like how it turned out very much; I just haven't got the heart to burn it, because somewhere, someone's going to fall in love with it. Maybe that someone is you. Wouldn't that be cool.
