2005. Acrylic on canvas. 6' x 3' Not for sale.
This piece was a long time coming. My second-largest commissioned piece as of its completion, Deep Repercussions also has more meaning than a lot of my previous work. Commissioned by a pair of engineers, the dark dot represents a moving object. Like the wake of a ship, waves of sound travel away from an object in motion. This is a splotch representation of this. The helix (helix=whirligig) isn't just for composition; it represents a path to create the sound depicted. See, as the viewer's eye travels over the whirligig, er helix, the visual sounds are produced in the background. Additional note: I spoke to those who commissioned the piece, and in the interests of technical accuracy, it could be said, "The Helix could be thought of as a conical spring in which structural waves could travel back and forth due to the sound waves generated by the moving sound source." In essence, we have the Tao of Boing.
A piece of artwork has only the meanings and energy a viewer brings thereinto; movement builds on movement. It's also a technical coup for me. Strong and pretty well constructed, I made less than a dozen errors... and no catastrophic ones. If you can count the splotches... you have too much free time.
